Setting the course for a thermal high at the blu26 championship
The blu26 class enlarges its sailing area. For the first time a blu26 regatta took place on the Urnersee. The Regattaverein Brunnen welcomed the class for its 2019 blu26 championship. The sailors had the chance to experience the lake with all its many factettes.
Being becalmed on the first day and with a wet second racing day, the weather conditions improved towards a summer high with wonderful, thermal winds, which the Urnersee is well known for. Team Hazel was either leading from the start or rolled up the field from behind to win the regatta with merits.
During periods of high pressure and sunshine the Urnersee impresses as a sailor’s paradise with its thermal winds. A bit more patience was needed this weekend though, until these hoped for wind conditions finally settled in. 40 blu26 sailors met in Brunnen to participate in the 2019 class championship. During a becalmed first race day the conditions did not allow for any starts to take place. The next day the forecast was extremely difficult, however the wind wanted to be found. In the afternoon three nice runs took place in the Gersauer Becken. A high-pressure area was settling in slowly.
After this light start, all participants enjoyed a great evening around a delicious dinner, looking forward to the next racing day. Meteo Swiss had correctly announced beautiful summer weather with superb winds and with the Urnersee at its best, all the sailors benefitted from the great sailing conditions. Four races were able to be run with thermal winds of 3-4 bft. The winning team, Hazel with skipper Michael Klötzli won the 2019 championship, closely followed by team Voodoo Child with Skipper David Menti, and team wyuna with skipper Michael Adamczyk in 3rd. During this regatta the autonomous operating buoy „Roboboj“ proved their capability in the deep waters. Via an app their position is controlled and so allows for a faster setting and adjustments of the race course without having to manually lift up and reset the buoy’s mooring. A big thank you goes to the Regattaverein Brunnen for their wonderful hosting and perfect organization as well as to the racing committee for their high engagement.
