Blu26 St. Moritz Cup 2015
Eighteen teams from Switzerland and Germany traveled to St.Moritz on the weekend of the 5th-6th of September 2015 for the Fleet Race Battle Engadin within the Blu26 St. Moritz's Cup. And went back home with beautiful prices and memories.
Already on Friday did the first sailors from the lowlands arrive in Engadin, to enjoy a training session with Christian "Blumi" Scherrer. With blue skies and Maloja winds, they were getting ready for the upcoming Fleet Race Battle. They then met in the evening in Hotel Hauser for the traditional Piöda, meat on a hot stone, to gather strength.
Saturday morning at 10 o’clock, the sailors met for the skippers meeting. The six blu26 boats, which were provided by Giachen Racing, Badrutt’s Palace, the Jugend Regatta Förderverein and Bluboats, were made ready immediately by the first teams racing. Thanks to a light northerly wind, race officer Marc Knöpfel could set the start for the first race shortly before noon. And so it went on, in varying wind conditions, everyone got a chance to sail plenty until shortly before sunset. The races were always thrilling - position changes were common, it was hard fought till the finish line and kept the umpire on the water, Heiko Flach, with his hands full. After this long and quite cold sailing day, the sailors met in the evening at the Sailing Club St. Moritz for a pleasant spaghettata where also the best pictures of the day taken by Jürg Kaufmann were shown.
On Sunday morning the clouds from the day before were already gone and the sun showed up early on top of the snowy mountains around the lake. With it also came the wind again. After 15 races a first subdivision of the fleet was made into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleet. They then sailed in the afternoon again 1 or 2 races with doubled points, and so were the fleet winners decided.
The overall victory went to Julian Flessati and his team from the Regatta Club Bodensee. Already on rank 2 on Saturday, they were able to secure a 1st and a 3rd place in the Gold fleet on Sunday, and with that a ski weekend at Hotel Crystal. In 2nd place came blunote with Beat Müller from the Zurich Yacht Club. Beat and his team will enjoy a ski weekend at Hotel Hauser in the winter. The podium was completed by the „Seedammpiraten”, skippered by Christa Kuster, who drove back to the upper Lake Zurich with a car full of Passugger water. All the other teams were rewarded with day passes from the Engadin Mountains railway and with Engadin nut cake.
Many thanks to St. Moritz Tourism, all partners, the race committee and all their helping hands, and to the Sailing Club St. Moritz, who made this great event possible. We are all looking forward to the next year and to more great races up in the mountains.
